PREFACE

Installing Windows NT from CD, HDD or floppies as usual on modern hardware (I mean Pentium4-based and later PCs) it is a difficult task due to installer incompatibility with faster/newer hardware & CPUs. That doesnt mean that Windows NT cannot RUN on such hardware. You CAN install Windows NT in virtialization software (QEMU, VirtualBox, VmWare, VirtualPC, Bochs ...) and then copy intalled OS image on "real" PC harddrive.
General installation notes

On modern systems like Pentium-II CPUs or higher you may expect problems when installing NT 3.5 or updating it with service pack. To resolve these problems you must edit these files:

From main distributive initial.inf and setup.inf; before:

[ProcessorVar]                         
STF_PROCESSOR = "" ? $(!LIBHANDLE) GetProcessor

after:

[ProcessorVar]                         
STF_PROCESSOR = $(ProcessorID_I586)

And from service pack update.inf; before:

Windows NT 3.5 General comments

Windows NT 3.5 is a milestone between 3.1 and 3.51 NT versions (much closer to 3.51 than to 3.1). So keep it in mind and refer to my articles about NT 3.1 / 3.51:

Differences in writing drivers compared with newer NT systems

Also you must keep an eye for missing ntoskrnl, ntdll, kernel32, user32, gdi32, advapi32, shell32 and other functions/procedures.

Assorted developer comments related to NT 3.5

Windows NT 3.5 does not support common controls widely used in Windows Explorer (BUT NT 3.51 DOES CONTAIN THEM!!!).
Windows NT 3.5 may not support some function calls to MSVCRT.DLL (MSVCRT40.DLL? MSVCRT20.DLL?). You must call KERNEL32.DLL, CRTDLL.DLL or use static linking.
